Amtrak monthly performance report for
June 2008
Ridership was still on the rise in June, again thanks to high gas prices and 'poor air service.' Overall ridership was up 12%, in spite of hits due to Thames Bridge replacement on the NEC and Midwest disruptions due to flooding. June 2008 was Amtrak's highest ticket revenue month ever, with $154.6 million - +12% over last year.
The Northeast Corridor was up 3% - again, in spite of service reductions north of New York due to replacement of the Thames River bridge. Average peak leg load factors stood at 71%. Amtrak cautions that summer trackwork, aging equipment and difficulties with on-time performance may impact Acela customer satisfaction levels and possibly ridership in the near future.
Other corridor services were up across the board - +19% vs. last year. Long-distance routes were up an average of 11%. So far this fiscal year, ridership is up 11% versus the same period last fiscal year.
